Letter from JR.
My name is Bear Looks Back, also known as JR. Fox. I'm from the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation in North Dakota. My father was a brave Arikara.Three spirits and a woman gave a vision to me. Through the vision I am being shown a way to help the "Women" find a way back; back to where they were stronger and when things were better for them. However, it may be a long way from where we are today. It is neither a "dream" of women's rights nor equality, but a "dream" where men, culture, society, and ceremony embrace women.
We men are both a cause and a result of what happens as women become unhealthy and displaced. This dream wishes to replace the women to their rightful place of honor and wisdom.
My own belief is that women need to look back at the strength and good nature of women of 200 years ago. I do not believe that women are equal to men. I believe they were given far more strength and much more compassion. I believe their ability to protect and understand children was once a powerful virtue they carried within them. And most of all, humility kept the women strong. It was their most sacred strength.
